The Crater family farm is located in Hamptonville, N.C. on Windsor Road approximately 2 miles from Buck Shoals Creek and 3 miles south of Highway 421. The creek was the home of Buck Shoals Mill, a water wheel grist mill that was built around 1880. The mill operated until the 1950s and the structure was finally razed in the 1960s. A picture circa 1890 of this local mill became the logo for Buck Shoals Vineyard.

The Crater farms were farmed by five generations with the primary crops being tobacco, corn, grain, cattle and chickens. The current vineyard site sits at an elevation of approximately 1150 feet and has both east and west facing slopes. Springs from the property feed ponds which later drain into Buck Shoals Creek.

The owners of Buck Shoals Vineyard and Winery are Terry and Joanne Crater. This is a true “family” affair with major assistance provided by the entire family. Marty Crater and John Long provide the knowledge and hands to keep things running smoothly. E.R. Crater Jr. and his wife of over 60 years, Edna, provide a watchful eye, support, and assistance for this new family endeavor.
